What happens to items that are not sold by the time a store closes its doors?

Whenever stores go out of business, they have big sales giving their customers one last chance to get the stuff they want at their favorite store while they still can. There are signs above the entrance and through the halls like "Everything Must Go!" among others. But what do they do with the items that have NOT gone? If items are still on the shelves and displays, do they just throw them away or give them to other stores, or something else?

There are "clean-up" companies that buy the inventory (cheap), move in other inventory from past close-outs, and then have another sale, ... and then move on again.

If they have other stores still open, might move the items to another store. Modtly they sell it to companies called liquidators.

Everything is sold...they keep lowering the price until it is. The liquidator buys it and they can throw it out if they want. But its rarely worth moving. Everything sells where it is. With the possible exception of some valuable fixtures if any.

Correct, it's incredibly expensive to repackage merchandise, load it onto a truck, and then ship it vs. selling it for even a small loss and letting another do all that work.

Most commonly, the items are purchased by liquidation companies. These companies will negotiate to buy a store's entire remaining stock for a very, very hefty discount. They will then sell it themselves, often at what is called 'wholesale' pricing.

They call in a liquidator. A liquidator makes an offer for everything that's left He then removes the merchandise and attempts to sell it elsewhere
