will a bad water pump cause your car to burn high HC during smog test?
- The DevilLv 79 months agoFavourite answer
That should not happen. Perhaps the NOx can go high from excess heat. The water pump only circulates water in the cooling system. If the water pump IS bad, replace it, but there are other problems. Bad valves and rings can cause high HC. Damaged exhaust or intake manifolds can affect the fuel mix. A weak spark can cause high HC. No. HC is Hydrocarbons. It's an indication that your engine is running rich/burning too much fuel.

No, elevated temperatures cause high NOx.
