A thin coating of gold was placed onto a tray at measured 27.75 cm by 14.25 cm. The mass of the tray increased by 0.0624 g during the process. The density of gold is 19.32 g/cc. Calculate the thickness of the plating. Record final answer in scientific notation.

The volume of Gold is .0624/19.32 = .00323 cm^3

The area of plating is 27.75×14.25 = 395.44 cm^2

Volume = length × width × height

H = V/area = .00323/395.44 = 8.2×10^-6 cm

= 8.2×10^-5 mm = 8.2×10^-2 microns = 82 nanometers

Supposing the tray is plated on only one side:

(0.0624 g) / (19.32 g/cm^3) / (27.75 cm x 14.25 cm) = 8.17 × 10^-6 cm

[If the tray is plated on both sides, divide the thickness calculated above by 2.]

volume of gold = mass / density of gold

volume of gold = width of tray * length of tray * thickness of gold

Solve for the thickness of the gold.
