They look so depressing too and Ugly, all the ugly townhouses in a row. Yuck. The countryside properties look nice though but cities like London, yuck.

Some are small, just as some in the U.S. are small. They are not all small. You must have been in an area where the houses were small. I walked through an estate sale in a neighborhood earlier today, in the U.S. and was shocked at just how small this house was. Some but not all of the houses in the neighborhood look just as small. I think it was a two bedroom - hard to believe those even exist. If you want to see larger homes in the UK, go to nicer areas. There are some beautiful and very large homes there. You just have to look in the right neighborhood.

I visited the UK some years ago and found the houses to be very small, 60's style, and very small "gardens". The kitchens had very small appliances, counters, and limited storage. Cars were also very small, and almost never a garage attached to the house.

Because in the UK there are 701 people per square mile and in the USA there are 87 people per square mile.

A typical UK house is much smaller than the typical US house being built now.

So what are the dimensions of a standard American house?

If you're American and asking that, then the answer is because they are small compared to American houses. Reasonably sized, not a waste of materials, energy and land. Functional and not needlessly lavish.
