Would a pride of lions be happy in the Amazon jungle or happier on the savannah ?

They aren't made to fight through the jungle and would be dead in a week. They need the open plains so they can spot, stalk and bring down their prey. The noise they would make in a jungle would make any prey within half a mile climb or scatter.

There were lions in North America before the end of the last ice age. They lived in savanna type habitats. Lions prefer savanna type habitats, where their color blend in well with the background. Cats that live in forests are usually spotted like the leopard or jaguar.

DNA evidence suggest that the jaguar evolved from the lion here in the Western Hemisphere. They are happy living in forests, since their coloration blends in well with the surroundings.

Lions are savannah animals. BTW, "jungle" is a misleading word; witness joe talking about "dense brush and undergrowth". You don't get that in tropical rain forest because of the lack of light from five layers of vegetation. The only places you get dense growth near the ground are adjacent to clearings and bodies of water. In other words, the places that tourists are most likely to see.

    Savannah.

In an Amazon jungle, lions would be trying to compete with the better-established jaguars, and might not know to watch for caimans.

lions dont do great in jungles, although they have discovered lion remains and fossils in jungle regions. its very very hard to choreograph a hunt with the rest of your pack when there is so much dense brush and undergrowth. its very easy to starve a lion pride beause they are tu ed to work together where they can navigate the hunt without having to look where they are going to flank or cut off prey.
