Is a substitute teacher a good job for a biology graduate during their gap year before graduate school?

Ideally a job even making no money working in any type of lab would be much better for your career. Substitute teaching is basically a low paid temporary labor which can be hard to plan around, and doesn't look that great on paper, but gives you some experience dealing with a bunch of kids in a classroom if you plan on working at a school sometime in the future.

Depends on your temperament, but might not be possible anyway. Most schools.require a teaching certificate or equivalent {"Teach for America" etc}

Work involving lab research in biology would be ideal, but you take what you can get.

Most public schools will not hire a teacher who is not licensed- which involves taking course in education. Private schools might hire you.
@df: And what a sad comment that is on the state of public education in some areas. Substitute teachers should be trained teachers, not baby-sitters.
Most US school districts require a valid teaching license, which has many requirements, usually including a year of graduate school and/or a licensure program.
