Can you get fired for having 2 jobs under the same building but different company’s?

My coworker works as a caretaker (full-time) and in the same building she’s also a dinning room server (part time) under 2 different companies and she’s currently in the process of having to choose between staying with one job and leaving the other. She’s fighting to keep both jobs but isn’t getting any answers that’ll help her out so if anyone knows anything about what she’s going through any answers is appreciated.

    not enough information given. did she sign a contract saying she could only work for one employer?

    Why does she have to choose? Most employers will tell you why you have to choose. Is just one place telling her she needs to choose or both? Normally the building has nothing to do with it, it's up to the owner of each company.

    Why is she not able to keep both?

    Does either have a contractual clause to limit other employment?

    Sure, if your state/local laws say workers are "at will" employees, you can be fired for any reason. Or no real reason. She needs to talk to the company that's threatening to fire her and see what the issues are. Perhaps there is some sort of conflict of interest, or they feel her performance is not up to par due to a over burdened schedule.

    It should be perfectly legal for her to have 2 jobs in the same company. Clearly, they knew she was an existing employee when they hired her so what's the problem? Who is she fighting???

    Both companies have a right to fire you. You did not receive permission from your first employer to get a second job, did you? And, you did not inform the second employer that you already have a job, did you? No and No - there you have it.

    VERY unlikely to get fired for that, but wouldn't be illegal

    Some companies don't allow you to moonlight....they feel that you won't be very productive.
