When addressing the phrase "Don't live in the past" focus on the word "live". To "remember" events and people through pictures is not living. Therefore, live for the future with a knowledge of the past. Your benefit will be to learn from mistakes to prevent repeating them. This logic comes from the functionalist point-of-view. There are no "feelings" associated with it, only objective analysis.

But NOT "everyone" says "don't live in the past." If you're paying attention at all in your sociology class (or any other social science class) you should know to be very suspicious of overall, general claims about "everyone," "always," "never," etc.
What data do you have to support your claim that "everyone" says that? None. So why do you make that claim?
