Well - you need lungs only if you wish to continue to live. Try living without lungs and let us know how that works out for you.

No, just a straw and 2 balloons. Replace them with that. That should do the trick.

Try taking them out and see how long you live, assuming you don't go into shock from the operation.

YES these organs are very vital to living and life.

The respiratory system begins with the nose and mouth and continues through airways to the lungs, where oxygen from the atmosphere is exchanged for carbon dioxide from the body's tissues. The lungs , the largest parts of the respiratory system, look like large pink sponges that almost fill the chest. Each lung is divided into sections(lobes); three in the right lung and two in the left. The left lung is a bit smaller than the right lung because it shares space with the heart in the left side of the chest.

the primary function of the respiratory system are to bring oxygen into the lungs, transfer the oxygen to the blood, and expel the waste product called carbon dioxide. Inhaled oxygen enters the lungs and reaches the alveoli. The walls of the alveoli and of the surrounding capillaries are only one cell thick and are in very close contact with each other. Oxygen passes easily through the thin walls of the alveoli and into the blood in the capillaries, and carbon dioxide passes from the blood into the alveoli and is exhaled through the nose and mouth.Oxygenated blood travels from the lungs through the pulmonary veins and into the left side of the heart, which pumps pumps the blood to the rest of the body. Oxygen-depleted, carbon dioxide- rich blood returns to the right side of the heart through two large veins, the superior and inferior vena cavae ,and is pumped through the pulmonary artery to the lungs, where it picks up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide

TO live you must have at least 1 lung.....
