Why is Times Square so popular?

So there's shops there that otherwise you wouldn't find at other parts of the city, is that the reason why everyone likes going there? Tourists don't count, I'm asking New York natives only.

I am in NYC several times a year, on music business (was they yesterday). I sometimes have some time to enjoy the city - but going to filthy crowded over-run TS is nowhere on my list. I have had to cut thru on my way to other places - that is enough.

People who live in New York don't go anywhere near Times Square. It's a tourist attraction- like Piccadilly Circus in London, or the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

It's mostly tourists who visit and hang out in Times Square. New Yorkers generally avoid it.
