Potassium and oxygen ....

Potassium and oxygen can form three different compounds

K2O ....... potassium oxide, where the oxidation state of K is +1 and O is -2

K2O2 ..... potassium peroxide, where K is +1 and O is -1 (O2^2-)

KO2 ....... potassium superoxide, where K is +1 and O is -½

I guess you mean K⁺ and O²⁻

The basic unit must be neutral, i.e. have zero charge. So we need two positives to cancel the two negatives giving:

K₂O
