Alexandria was partly more sophisticated because it was in Egypt, which was the incomparably most sophisticated place on the planet before Islam. It was after all, Egypt. Then it was Hellenised under Alexander and the Ptolemides. It had an extensive Jewish Gnostic community. The Roman Empire adding it to their Empire made it a jewell in their crown which was already a jewell in its own right.
