Is "coding" is another word for computer programming?

Update:

A computer can be a one thinking machine. For instance, you need to replace a window in a house. First a person needs to cut the frame to fit inside the window hole. Then another person needs to measure inside window frame to get glass size. For quicker answer the computer will tell you both frame size and the glass size. Get the drift?

Yes, "coding" is used as a slang term for programming, as writing code is usually an essential part of programming.

A lot of answers here are making arbitrary judgments on what is or isn't coding or programming- that's really not necessary. You can use the words interchangeably.

Could be... "Coding " could also refer to using HTML which is not computer programming.

They mean the same to most people. As a programmer I would think a coder did not write the program. A programmer is more involved in the creation but a lower person may do the coding.

    No.

If someone writes, "My cousin was coding all night," it is NOT clear that the cousin was working on a computer program.

However, people often use it as if it means "computer programming". And, in context, it can often be clear that that is what they mean.

What do you think of the following?:

    ----------------------------

After he woke up he painted the ocean but it was not forthcoming. The condors next door weren't prepared for breakfast. The other neighbors were hesitant but the direction was not clarified. So, the mayor declared a week of sorrow. The bicycles were arranged in an appropriate fashion, and so it rained and they packaged it up.

    ----------------------------

They are proper sentences. I coded them correctly. But they don't mean anything. Programming requires coding, but coding alone won't produce a program that accomplishes anything.

Update: A car can be a transportation machine. For instance, a guy can build a road and then another person can bike to their destination on the road. To get there quicker, you can drive a car. But you don't have to learn to drive because you can also have someone else drive you. Get the drift?
