Sociological research spans from descriptive, to exploratory, to explanatory, to evaluative studies. Things we learn about group behavior and human interaction are rooted in sociology. I would say the greatest contributions of sociology are program and policy suggestions through applied sociological research. Examining the effectiveness and efficiency of social programs and suggesting changes to improve them ultimately improve the lives of those participating.

As a field of study, Sociology is simply an outlet for people to express an opinion or theory about man. There are no true contributions other than that.

I'm certain it's none, but it may actually be literally less.
