Describe the cause of the attraction between molecules of water?

    It's electric. Watermolecules are not electrically symmetric. They each have a positive and a negative side. the positive side of one molecule will attract the negative side of another one

    The cause of attraction between water molecules ....

    Water molecules are attracted to each other because of hydrogen bonding and all three of the van der Waals forces: Keesom forces (dipole-dipole attraction), Debye forces (induced attraction) and London dispersion forces (which all molecules exhibit).

    Hydrogen bonding is the weakly covalent attraction when the H of one water molecules bonds with the oxygen of an adjacent molecule.

    Keesom forces. Water is a bent molecule (~105 degrees) with a net dipole moment (1.85D) and so the positive portion of one molecule is attracted to the negative end of another.

    Debye forces. Because water molecules are polar, the negative end of one molecule can "push" electrons away from the positive end, making it more positive, and increases the attraction between molecules.

    London dispersion forces. All molecules exhibit London forces. The strength of London forces depends on the total number of electrons and the area over which they are spread.

    It is due to the unique nature of Hydrogen, resulting in hydrogen bonding. It is also considered as Unique dipole dipole attraction.

    A water molecule is a polar molecule. The oxygen atom has a larger electronegativity than the hydrogen atoms. This produces a polar covalent bond between the water molecules.

      While hydrogen bonds do have some covalent character, it is not the same as a covalent bond within a molecule. The hydrogen involved in hydrogen bonding is bridging two water molecules.

    The main force between water molecules is Hydrogen bonding. It is caused by interactions between the hydrogen of a molecule and the oxygen of other.
