Should the Sydney couple who almost killed their child through veganism be made to do their prison time?

The couple's 20 month old baby had to go to hospital because it had a seizure and was extremely malnourished due to the parents forcing a strict vegan diet on the child. It was only the size of a 3 month old and had rickets, the diet was so poor that her bones were breaking.

Vegan diets are not normal for humans and they are extremely dangerous for children. How can parents be so stupid? That kind of undernourishment happens in the 3rd world where people can't get access to food, it shouldn't be happening in Australia.

The couple were sentenced to 18 months in prison but will instead just do 300 hours of community service. Their child has obviously been taken from them and is now living with her grandparents. They have been given visitation rights. If adults are stupid enough to be vegan then that is up to them but forcing that on a child is gross negligence. They could obviously see how unwell and underdeveloped the child was. Should they have been made to serve their prison sentence?

They should do community service at a farm.

What's doing time in prison going to accomplish? And why blame veganism? In a social environment, someone should have noticed that the child was behind in physical development, and insisted on contacting a doctor.

Where the parents disconnected from society? Did both have a psychiatric problem?

Veganism has a cult following which brain washes their followers. These parents should be shot like all vegans should be.Noticve all soy boys are vegans and homosexuals. Vegans don't even believe in vaccinating children

I feel sad for any parents whom are so misled as to believe they are providing quality care for their child, but are instead causing severe harm. Prison is supposed to be for people who have committed crimes, for both purposes of punishment and rehabilitation.

Punishing someone who 'believes' they are raising their children properly, seems counterproductive. They are traumatised enough at the near death of their child, without creating further suffering.

If they deliberately perpetuated this process after seeing these results, then that's a different matter. Education is the key, not prison time.

I think instead they should be compelled to complete a comprehensive parenting course. This way they will learn to cater to the actual needs of their children and not follow the advice of some charlatan.

That would cover the rehabilitation aspect quite nicely.

If I were the judge presiding over their case, I would not be sentencing them to our already overcrowded prisons.

Therefore I can see why parents might consider a doctor's advice to be incorrect or biased.
I guess it does indeed depend on the circumstances.

Veganism in itself isn't dangerous - but the couple were not giving their child a balanced diet (vegan or otherwise)

Time in prison won't really serve any purpose; prisons are overcrowded. A community service outcome would be far more useful.

If adults are stupid enough to believe a man walked across water they’re also stupid. All of these vegan and religious beliefs are retarded.
