There are seven species of salmon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salmon#Species), but yes, we're dealing with two of them.

    Alaskan is better than Atlantic.

Alaskan or Pacific wild will probably be more red.

Not sure about flavors, but the canned pink salmon is cheaper than the red one.

Pink salmon is inexpensive; red salmon costs more. Red salmon flesh is actually red, and pink salmon looks more like tuna. When red and pink salmon are pulled fresh from the sea their flesh is, in fact, distinctly red or pink. ... Red salmon gets its enhanced color from eating krill, a type of small shrimp.

Red salmon is firmer and, to my mind, tastier. Pink or dog salmon is more abundant and a lot cheaper. BTW, it is sometimes called dog salmon because it is a major part of the food for sled dogs.

It might, or it might not. Salmon is complicated. Buying it is not as simple as what color it is.

Source(s): Getting a nice filet tonight on the way home, for the BBQ.
