How come so many really big really strong guys have no record of ever playing football?

They don't like getting hit? No school can force anyone to join the football team can they?

Not all 6'9" guys can play basketball either. Body type is a small fraction of what it takes to play sports well.

As they say, it is not about the size of the dog in the fight, it is the size of the fight in the dog. On one hand, there are big and really strong people that never played football. On the other hand, my sister was 4'11" and 98 pounds, when she played her only year of football during her senior year of high school, at age 17, and she held her own pretty well :)

  • Maybe they didn't want to. Maybe they didn't have the passion for the game. Maybe they had other priorities. Nothing wrong with pursuing your passions. The problem is joining something and then quitting because eventually quitting becomes a habit.

Being big and strong doesn’t translate to athletic ability.

There’s also endurance. You need to be able to last 4 quarters and a full football season. Being strong doesn’t necessarily mean that you can do it for a prolonged period.

Also Football, like most other professions takes practice and you have to learn and train for it. You can’t just walk in and hit people. There are plays to learn, instinct to get accustomed to, and strategy involved.

There’s an art to a proper tackle. A linemen has to learn proper techniques in order to beat the man in front of him.

I played with a good 6 foot+ 300 lb guy in high school. Biiiig dude. Strong too. But was soft as a pillow and could barely run.

Can they throw, catch, tackle, block, cover, or break tackles? Physical strength doesn t mean you will have the skills to be a successful football player.

Probably the same reason so many really fast guys have no record of ever running track.

Maybe they didn't want to play. (amongst a hundred other reasons)

True. My oldest son was the fastest runner in school, but declined when asked to be on the track team. Now as an adult, he's rediscovered his love for running and has run several distance events.

Football takes a certain mentality as well as a certain skill set. Just as not all tall guys play basket ball not all large guys play football.
