Think of it this way ~~~~

A modem/router only receives incoming signals from your internet service provider( ISP ) and delivers it to your computer to use .....does not manner if you buy it yourself , or rent it from your ISP service.

If you buy a car ( modem)....you have to put gas ( ISP ) in it for it to

    run/work.........

This is for a regular paid account......

That is not taking in consideration about picking up somebody else's " WiFi signal "---say from a neighbor's wireless WiFi , or someone else around

your area . You can tap into this WiFi signal ~~~providing a couple things ---like it has no password blocking you and not a " restricted one "---like the Sheriff's Office .

Many areas of town will have " hot spots " to sit down for a cup of coffee ..hamburger/fries ,with your laptop and use their WiFi service free ....care should be taken when using these free public ones ,on security measures....

Perhaps when you get set up ...go into your control panel and turn on your WiFi settings ...it will search out for Wifi signals and give you a list to choose from ....

It is then " free" ...in this regards..., but bear in mind ---you are getting this signal from someone else....which tapping into it can/may cause a slow down when you both are using it.....depending ~~~~~.

It would be nice if you knew someone close by that you could tap into , with their permission and password...if needed.

    Then it's really free..........

    Have a nice day .

No. You need the services of an ISP to access the internet. They charge you for that service. Many will also provide a 'free' or 'low cost' modem/router, but you can always buy your own if you wish.

    No.

You still need an ISP to connect to.

No. You pay for the service much like you pay for electricity, but provide your own lamps and TV.

Though most ISPs will provide both the modem and router, it can be cheaper to provide it yourself, but again, you pay for the service to the modem.
