Why does putting in a tampon for the first time hurt?

I’m 16, I’m a virgin and I’ve never put a tampon in. I tried today and it hurt. Did anyone else have that experience their first time? Any tips or advice?

It didn't hurt me the first time I inserted a tampon.

Here's a tip: Because you're an inexperienced tampon user, study the instructions and diagrams that come in every box of tampons and tell you how to properly insert a tampon. A tampon is to be inserted at a slightly upward angle. Just allow it to follow the natural slant of your vagina, and don't force it. If you try to insert it "straight in", it's going to hurt.

It hurts because you are tensing your muscles up.
