Is it true that Napoleon wrote letters to his wife saying "I'll be home in two weeks' time, stop washing"?

He is said to have written "Ne te lave pas, j'accours et dans huit jours je suis là." (Don't wash, I'm rushing back and I'll be there in eight days.)

Unfortunately, I can't confirm that he did write that. I have searched pdf files of all his known letters for "lave" and only got "esclave" a few times.

Hygiene in 18th century Europe was horrible. Baths were considered unhealthy. I suspect that like animals, people had different odors that identified them to others. If Napoleon did write this, he was telling his wife not to remove her sexy odor before he came home!

The translation I’ve heard is, “don’t wash.”

Yes. Napoleon was an odd man in many ways.
