1:3:1 means 5 parts in total.

1 part Angad

3 parts Malachy

1 part Jim.

£30 ÷ 5 parts = £6 a part.

So

£6 Angad

£18 Malachy

£6 Jim

Angad, Malachy and Jim share £30 in a ratio 1 : 3 : 1.

How much money does each person get?

Angad gets £6, Malachy gets £18 and Jim gets £6.

A trick with ratios is to add them up, so you can find the number of parts. After that you just divide the total into parts:

Angad : Malachy : Jim

1: 3 : 1

1 + 3 + 1 = 5 parts.

1 part = 30/5 = £6

3 parts = 3 x 6 = £18

Angad = £6

Malachy = 3 x 6 = £18

Jim = £6

Please give extra money to the first two, so they can change their names.

It would be x + 3x + x = 30

5x = 30

x = 6

20%:60%:20% == 1:3:1 do you see it? The ratios add up to 5 so multiply them all by 2 to get ten or (100%). So the answer is: 6:18:6 pounds in order.
