Vin number problems?
So I bought a 1974 nova ss and the vin number isn’t 17 letters it has 13 and I tried 4 websites and even called a dealership and they said it has to be 17 but on the dash it only has 13 my friends are saying it’s because it’s a old car it’s like that but how do I find out if my model is a real super sport

Two things here:
1. The 17 digit VIN didn't start until 1981. 13 digits sound's fine for a 1974.
2. They don't want you car and blew you off.

The VIN numbers for my 1974 MG Midgets have 13 digits. Try entering 4 zeros at the beginning of the VIN number.

An older car like yours will have only 13 characters in the VIN...the longer VINs didn't start until around 1981.You can look up what the VIN codes mean at various sites that decode VIN numbers but the VIN will not tell you if you have a true SS model or not. Just body type and engine size, build plant, etc..
The SS package was an option and the only way to tell is to locate the build sheet inside the car which will show what options the car came with. The build sheet is the document that went along with the car during the assembly process and is usually tucked in the springs under the front or rear seats, or inside a door trim panel or above the glove box or gas tank. Whatever component was the last item to be installed in the car....usually the seats or dash. Try to find that build sheet and see what options are listed on it which will tell if it's a true SS or not and other options. Z26 was the option code for the SS package.
Worked in GM parts, service and bodyshop for 25 years and restored a few old muscle cars including a 69 Camaro SS 427 and 70 Chevelle SS 454

The car is 45 years old for chrissakes. What difference does it make if it's a "super sport" or not.?

Odd how you are old enough and able enough to buy a car, yet you have never heard of the DMV. You do realize that by law, you must register it within 30 days, don't you?

The 17 character Vehicle ID Number (VIN) wasn't mandatory until 1981. Your car is older than that, so it's OK to have fewer characters. If I were looking for a VIN breakdown on an older car, I'd probably search for a Nova owner's group or a similar enthusiast web site.

You’ll have to ask the car maker and hope that they still have a record of your VIN.

Old cars have shorter vins. 17 started around 1980-81.
