Because when we're depressed we don't want to deal with what's making us depressed

For me, it doesn't. If I'm depressed, I will be up all night with my emotional suffering.

Depression is a lack of enough neurochemicals in your brain, which results in making the brain lethargic and want to sleep some more. But that's not always the case, sometimes depression results in insomnia too. You can never tell which way one person's brain responds to it over another. It even takes production of certain neurochemicals to get to sleep, so some people may not even be able to get to sleep because they are lacking those chemicals, such as seratonin and melatonin.

Being sick in general makes the body want to rest to recuperate. Depression is even worse in that sense because one of the symptoms is a lack of energy/feeling tired.

Excess sleep is a form of depression. When someone sleeps, their depression goes away and they experience a happier time when they dream. The more you dream, the less depressed you are. Why wake up and be depressed, when you can dream of being whatever makes you happy. The only problem: some people believe in order to experience permanent happiness, you must experience the big sleep...death.

There's usually fatigue associated with depression. The physical underpinnings of depression and fatigue are pretty much the same, I think.

    It's a great escape mechanism.

Because it causes you to have a lack of motivation and therefore a lack of energy. Also for some sleep may be a way to escape reality.

Because if you're awake, generally, you have to face the world.
