If someone was a lead actor in a major Hollywood movie and it turned out widely successful and gained a huge audience would they be big star?

    Not necessarily. Sam Worthington starred in Avatar, one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. His career has pretty much tanked.

    Yes, but they very, very rarely give a lead role in anything to an 'unknown' actor.

    Lead roles in major productions are given to very well-established actor with a great reputation and who is very popular already.

    Most of the time, that someone is well-known before they become a lead actor.
