    1. They show or work their dogs.

    2. They do genetic health testing

    3. They dont crossbreed

    4. They focus on only one or two breeds

    5. Pets are sold on non-breeding contracts

    6. Minimum 2 year health guarantee

    7. Always willing to take dog back if owner is unable or unwilling to provide care

I've just answered your later question but will repeat here...

In my book I would only ever buy from someone who ...

    1. Breeds for standard and temperament.

    2. Does all the necessary genetic testing on the dogs and uses only fully tested lines.

    3. Has one litter at a time in order to give each the best socialisation and care and indoors at that.

    4. Knows what they are doing enough to balance conformational looks.

    5. ALWAYS sends pups out with breeding restrictions on (these can be lifted later at breeders discretion).

    6. ALWAYS puts on contract that they will take back and be responsible for rehoming or help in rehoming should it be necessary. (lifetime backup).

Check if they are registered with the Kennel club.

Go to their premises, is it clean?. Look at the conditions any dogs or pups are kept in.

    Read their conditions of sale.

It should include that you must take the pup or dog back to the breeder if at any time or for any reason you cannot keep the dog or pup.

Ask to see the pedigree details of their dogs, and details of any parents of pups, health check results.

Always see any pups with their mother, and if the Father is not there, ask if its possible to see him. (He may belong to someone else).

A good breeder may also ask the buyer of a puppy, questions they consider relevant for the pups future welfare.

Contact one via the relevant Breed Club - most have Codes of Ethics which should rule out BYBs. Should!!
