Back in the day, every band you've mentioned received plenty of accolades and recognition from the mainstream media. Nothing obscure, underrated, or underground here at all. The fact some didn't get recognized by such pathetic biased organizations as The Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame, or are less talked about today, isn't an accurate bar or standard to gauge.

Suzy Quatro was pretty much second tier. Zappa was just too challenging for most. All the rest got plenty of attention if you were actually there. Also Hot Tuna, Mott the Hoople and Johnny Winter - the wild man from Texas.

Someone who wants to put The Band in that category is surely lacking. They were front and center for some years. Heck, they made a movie about them.

Possibly the most underrated rock group from that era was The Band. They were awesome, and nowadays way too many people have never heard of them.

The mainstream press only covers mainstream pop, and now, rap/hip-hop. It was the rock press that didn't give many of the acts you name their due. In my opinion, SRV was not one of them. The rock press loved the guy and almost deified him after his death, making him, to blues-rock, what Hendrix was to rock in general.

The rock press generally hated progressive rock to begin with.
