If you have no plans to EVER move, then go into the Guard. If you desire to move sometime in the future to a different state, go into the Reserves. It is easier to move around if you are in the Reserves.

Ranking up is a video game term.

The benefits are essentially the same except for whatever additional benefits the state throws in for Guardsmen (usually educational benefits). Enlistment and reenlistment bonuses depend on the needs of each component at the time.

Pay, healthcare, retirement, veterans benefits, etc are all the same.

The other big difference is that the governor can call up the Guard for state duty.

You are not provided housing in either unless you are full time or when in training you get accommodation. One weekend a month, 2 weeks of the year, that’s all you’re doing. State NG you can get called up during a disaster if requested. Deployments for NG and Reserves is rare in today’s world. Each state is different in what education options they offer.
