Why is brown rice more expensive than white rice when I feel like it takes more to make white rice?
With white rice, you have to take the extra step of stripping the bran, so how does it end up costing less?
Or am I wrong.. is it more difficult somehow to keep the whole rice in tact?

White rice is like white flour. All the actual nutrition is removed, so it has an almost unlimited shelf life and bugs, rats and other vermin don't get into it.
Brown rice, like any whole grain, includes a germ that has some oils in it that can go rancid. Plus, because the vitamins and other 'micro-nutrients' are there, you have to store it more carefully.

That makes sense, but it is all about the money. Some people will get brown rice because it is better nutritionally so the food industry charges more. People also expect healthy foods to cost more money.

Why is lite beer more expensive? Same kind of thing - a perceived or actual benefit costs more even though the process is cheaper.

Because white rice is more popular. Therefore, they sell more and don't have to charge as much per bag, in order to make a profit.
If brown rice was more popular, it would be white rice that was more expensive.
Supply and demand .. simple economics.

Much more white rice is produced and shipped , so there's the economy of scale at work. Also, the producers can also sell the rice bran.
Brown rice doesn't keep as long, so there's more product going out of the date code.
