Do you think it’s smart to buy a K98k Mitchell’s Mauser for $ 2000 on a layaway plan?

Not even close to a correct answer. It's over twice the price it should be.

Absolutely not. If you have $2K to spend on a Kar98k, then go to a gun collector/dealer or do your research and check listings on one of the gun auction sites.

Seen them less than $1000 at gun shows.

No, considering Mitchells Mausers are almost always gunsmith assembled non numbers matching. You can find a numbers matching K98k at gunshows for less than half.

Also, pawn shops and gun stores offer lay away, and you'll find K98's there for much less than 2 grand. Plus you'll be able to handle the rifle before buying, unlike Mitchell's where you get what they send you, sight unseen.
