NFL: Is it possible for a team to trade a player they just drafted, before giving him a contract?

Simply put, can a rookie nfl player get traded with no contract in place? I'm aware of draft rights but don't know if that can be used in-place of a contract....??

Yes, it is. For example, Eli Manning was drafted by the Chargers and traded to the Giants for their draft pick, Philip Rivers.

  • Yes. In 2004 the Chargers drafted and traded Eli Manning before they signed him. In 1983 the then-Baltimore Colts drafted and eventually traded John Elway.

Yeah, San Diego did that back in 04, drafted Eli Manning as the first pick and traded him to the Giants the same day.
