If I use my credit card online to buy a $40k item will it go through?

call your CC issuer, (on the back of the card) and tell them what you're trying to do. It WILL NOT go through if your limit is under $40k

Don't bet on this transaction being processed online.

Not how credit cards work, so almost certainly it would not.

You, your kids, and wife and every friend, lover, and favorite teacher(s) you’ve ever had since childhood will be tracked down and arrested.

It is highly unlikely as you usually have a total credit limit of not more than, say, $3000.

The merchant will also have a limit set for individual transactions. This is not likely to be more than $5000 and probably much less.

Yes, if it's a Mastercard black or other similar no limit card. Regular credit cards however wont.

Only if that's within your limit but even then it might not to help prevent fraud.

Credit cards have a much smaller limit.
