Is taxing a tax legal?
Just bought something from a fast food restaurant and saw they had 2 subtotals and thought they taxed twice on the sales but just calculated it and they had a tax totaled it and then had another tax on the new totaled and they had another tax on it and then totaled it all. This way they are now taxing the sales tax first levied on the purchase.

Report this to you State Tax Authority, make a copy and send them the copy so they can see what your talking about. If they fine this action to be illegal you may receive a reward for reporting it.

Depends on what specifically the taxes were and where you are.

No. That is totally ILLEGAL. Send a copy of the receipt to the FTC and to the Attorney General, and Corporate & Consumer Affairs. That will straighten them out rather quickly.Source(s): Certified Paralegal, with 25+ years'.

I GUARANTEE you misread the receipt.
POST a legible image and someone can tell you what it ACTUALLY says.

If the fast food place is part of a large chain, contact corporate management about that. If it's a stand alone shop or small chain, contact the owners.
That should be enough to get the process stopped. But, state officials might be interested in looking at their books, to see if they've done it to others, and for how long. Contact your state's tax board or attorney general office, or whatever state, county, or city office would handle it.

If you have to ask, then the answer is yes.
