There is a new update called village and pillage (1.14) which allows you to fight evil villagers (illagers) and defend villages from raids. Other than that the stigma for it being a kiddie game has vanished for some reason, and people just appreciate how much of a work of art it is. In the new update they also flushed out villages, making it more fun to manage one of your own and adding purpose to doing so, you get rewarded via cheaper prices if you defend a village. Also Pewdiepie started a series on his Minecraft play through so people probably are happy about that.

People have resorted back to minecraft for a few reasons.

    1) The lack of new and fun games coming out recently.

    2) Showing these noobs that only the og's know and play the real #1 game out there

    3) making a statement to show that all these new games are inferior
