That depends on your definition of what "comfortable" is. What may seem comfortable to you may be intolerable to others and unbelievably luxurious to somebody else.

You can still live reasonably well, out in Staten Island......for about $50,000 a year.
Staten Island is still part of NYC.

A lot. Unless you want to sleep on the sidewalk or live in one of those “single room occupancy” hotels which might not even exist anymore. There’s also people that used to rent or own slips and live on houseboats in Upper West Side boat basin but don’t know how much that costs, If it still exists

Do you mean specifically New York City? If so, which borough? For Manhattan you'll need an annual salary of $200K to live comfortably, less (although not dramatically less) in the other boroughs. Also, it depends on your housing requirements.
