Why does anyone need to rent a digital cable tv box from a cable provider, if one has a smart tv? How does one get the tv to work without a cable box? Thanks.

Access to other services like Hulu, YouTube, Netflix (of course), etc.

Well, streaming video is its main job, so if you're not interested in the other services (Hulu, YouTube, whatever), and you already have a way to watch Netflix on your best TV, then there's no selling one to you. But it's good at what it does.

You're confusing a streaming service like Neflix and a streaming device like the Roku. Those are 2 very different things. The Roku is a streaming device that lets you stream content from different services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, among others. You don't need a Roku in order to watch Netflix, you just need a compatible device.
