    Maybe too loose or worn.

Its a 2.0L not 2.6. After doing a bunch of other things, I finally changed the belt. Good for about a day then screeching again. Just going to buy a belt for the power steering, cut the ac right out. Car's just too old to buy new/used ac unit.

It is ether loose or when you turn the car off you do not turn the air off first and your over stressing the belt and pulley system when you are stating the engine.

It is old, has glazed over, and is slipping. Replace it.

Check all the pulleys for free rotation. If they all rotate freely the belt needs tightening. As said, fit a new belt as slipping damages the surfaces.

    It's worn. Replace it.

Probably because it hasn't been replaced in the last 18 years and is loose and/or dry/burnished.

The vehicle belonged to my sister who had it since it was new and she took it to the Mazda dealership for regular maintenance, so I'm sure it's been replaced. I did replace the belt, but its still screeching, so I'm just going to buy the power steering belt and bypass the ac altogether.
