Ballet question?

Are ballerinas and ballet dancers naturally skinny?

Is it possible that somebody is fat but has the ballet talent?

I mean, I have a friend and she is obese. She's 20 kg more than her healthy weight. She started ballet recently and on her first day, her teacher was shocked with her. She could doo pretty much everything very well and she was better than the majority of dancers there that have been dancing for 2 or 3 years.

She does have a dancer's bone structure but she's obese.

So, can an obese person be talented at ballet or only naturally thin girls can be talented at it?

Thanks!

You are absolutely correct. The majority of “skinny people” are actually not suited to ballet. It is about bone and muscle structure. Someone overweight might definitely have all that is required aside from her weight. However too much body fat means you really shouldn’t do pointe work as it is too much stress on the feet plus it is a problem for Pas de deux especially lifts. If she loses weight she can eventually do pointe work.

Obviously someone obese can’t have a ballet career. Just like someone who is skinny but has non of the bone structure required also can’t have a ballet career. The difference is weight is something you can change. Bone and muscle structure is not something you can change.

Note: Some professional ballet dancers can eat what’re they want and not gain weight. Others have to watch their weight. Professional ballet dancers are all lean muscle. Muscle burns fat and professional dancers burn carbs like crazy. So it is easier to main a good weight, Some eat healthy others eat junk. Just like anyone else.

Some are naturally skinny; some are not. Many ballet dancers watch their weight pretty vigilantly.

I've known some talented overweight dancers, but they can't dance professionally. Ballet dancers need to be thin for a variety of reasons.

They tend to be skinny because of the high levels of exercising they do. Plus, they are pushed to keep their weight down.

Unfortunately, there is/was a weight limit for ballet. So to answer your questions yes, they have to be skinny.

But then again this is 2019 anything is possible.

llia regarding making a career, even if she lost weight it would depend on her current age. There is an age window of opportunity and professional level schools won’t train obese students. Recreational schools don’t have the right training to pass on to students for a ballet career.

she won't get far. the audience expects it's dancers to be rail thin. your friend will be shamed into losing weight. the teacher will ignore her and not encourage her until she loses weight.

This is not a professional school as they don’t take obese students. No reason to think the teacher would ignore a talented student in a recreational school who can surpass the thin dancers who can’t do as much.
