Why didn't the US military just seize Saddams oil wells in 2003?

Instead of sending American forces deep inside Iraqi cities to be ambushed and killed.

Why didn't the Americans simply send huge armoured formations and just seize Saddams oil wells. Then just mine his only seaport Basra and job done.

This would have saved US troops from getting ambushed in the cities, use less troops and miniuscle casualties. You would only need about 5000 men and a few tanks, artillery to hold these positions and then American oil contractors can suck Iraq dry faster then a Brazilian call girl working on commission.

Without the oil money Saddams regime would have starved and withered away and we would have just laughed at him and his silly moustache.

Well, way back in 2003 the military didn't have the understanding that they do now. What's obvious to us modern people was a complete mystery to the old timer generals.

Cos that would have been a crime of international importance - ie it was illegal under international law

The repercusions of that would have been ENORMOUS

The people here seem to forget this was not just a US war. Something like 48 countries were in the coalition of troops to defeat Saddam Hussein forces. Yes the US was the largest has the largest military due to the large population of the USA. Americans seem to think there were only US troops there as likely their media were only interested in what the American forces were doing. The American intelligence reported there was reason to believe Saddam Hussein was still making weapons of mass destruction and NATO believing this information decided to act as a coalition force. Saddam Hussein when his forces were routed from Kuwait after an invasion agreed to stop making weapons of mass destruction and allow in western inspectors to verify there was no weapons manufacturing going on in Iraq. Saddam Hussein after several years started to refuse to allow the inspectors into Iraq so the coalition of forces decided it was fair to accept Iraq was making these weapons again. US troops attacked the main Iraq military defensive line which Saddam Hussein bragged was invincible and declared it would be one mother of a war the US would regret. The US forces realised it was a strong line so deviously snuck a large attack force through the desert and attacked the line from the end where Saddam's forces could not bring all their weaponry against them and the US forces just went down the line destroying it. The Iraq army fled back to Bagdad and many threw away their weapons and their uniforms running away in their underwear hoping to hide from the war making out to be innocent civilians. A couple crack Iraq divisions who were very well armed and trained fought to keep the Attackers from entering Bagdad but were no match for the US forces. Other coalition country's forces had been deployed around Iraq so it was mainly the US army who fought the main part of the Iraq army.

The coalition forces went in with one purpose to get rid of Saddam Hussein and his supporting military leaders who gave him his evil power. They were not there to seize Iraqi oil fields or other assets and were there for the sole purpose to rid Iraq of Saddam Hussein and install a new democratic government elected by the people believing the people would be glad to get rid of the tyrant and to have fair and proper government. It was about bringing peace and stability to the region making the Middle East a little safer and stable. Unfortunately the coalition did not realise it actually got rid of one tyrant and others would start little wars in Iraq trying to grab power and control of Iraq's oil wealth for themselves so the coalition forces had to stay for several years training the new democratic military forces in ways to deal with this new menace.

Maybe you should be a military general then......

And the objective there was to install a democratic government, not build an oil refining complex.

To do that the people and their cities needed to be liberated.

How do you think it would have gone down if Iraq's remaining and limited livelihood/commerce was stolen? There would be national upheaval on top of insurgency.

In the modern era, you can't just take swathes of land without repercussions. For better or for worse, the idea was to monopolise their politics by installing a puppet government. Not that that was actually successful in the end.
