Books almost never make me cry but one that did was "The Plague Dogs" by the late Richard Adams (of Watership Down fame).

It's a very interesting book, written from the perspective of two dogs that escape an animal testing facility.

Some passages cover what goes on in this facility and while the novel is fiction "every 'experiment' described [in the novel] is one which has actually been carried out on animals somewhere" as Adams writes in the foreword.

As someone who loves animals some parts of the book were heart-wrenching and difficult to read.

It's not a "nice book" but it's a very good book and I am glad that I read it.

Not quite a book, more of a novella:

"Thy Servant a Dog" by Rudyard Kipling.
