Historically, when type setters were setting text letter by letter they used blocks for spacers between letters and words. Those blocks were called "furniture". Maybe that's what they are called...?

Packing material. If the packing is in the shape of the item shipped, then it could be formed Styrofoam packing.
If there were pieces of foam surrounding the packed item, then they are typically referred to packing peanuts.

It is called "packing"and can take many different forms from "peanuts" to pre-formed blocks to hold the item tightly in place.

garbage. the darn stuff can't be recycled. So it ends up in landfills where it very slowly is consumed over the next 50 to 150 years.

chocolate-dipped foal pebbles are the best. Kids love 'em.
most such filler is not actually Styrofoam® but rather some other chemical.
