    I am student of Cold War and there are various reasons cited for it;

    1.To save the precious lives from the scourge of war

    2.To speedily end the War

    3.America is a White country and first time challenged by Non-white nation.

    4.To teach a lesson a lesson to non-european country and sending message to all asians.

    5.In fact by the America wanted to bomb the Japan, its almost lost the war and its is on the verge of collapse and surrender, but still americans nuked Japan only to send message to USSR and others who are challenging its supremacy.

    Thats it my friend.

      I agree that 3 through 5 are wrong. If the Japs were on the verge of surrender, why did it take two bombs to get them to surrender? And they did not do that until 5 days after the second bomb. The dirty Japs were stubborn treacherous bastards. The atomic bombs were the only way to put them down.

    The US didn't spend $2B on the Manhattan Project w/ no intention to use it.

    The results speak for itself ... prior to the bomb, the Japanese insisted to resist until death. After the bomb, they surrendered.

    Too end the war. Now think about it, since Japan showed every sign of being willing to fight to the last man....how many lives did using atomic bombs save?

      I believe the Emporer also made some sort of proculation that drafted every man woman and child into the Japanese military making everyone in Japan a legitimate military target, this before Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

    To end the war quickly as possible. It was reported that the Japonese were going to arm civilians. And that could have dragged the war on for another year. The other allies wanted this over as well.

    Germany was also targeted for bombing but they surrendered. Hitler died before bomb was finished.

    The "real" reason? As opposed to what? 75 years of published history?

    To really test their atomic weapons in real time.

    Americans were in a rush to save Britain from Nazi Germany, so they had to quickly defeat Japan before it's too late. The solution was to kill Japanese citizens to make Japan surrender quickly.

      Oh, and armourer, Britain was far from safe before any American arrived in Europe. If they had been, there wouldn't have been any need for Americans to go to Europe.

      The Hiroshima & Nagasaki bombs were both airbursts, with little effect on the ocean. It was nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands in the Central Pacific, starting in 1946--after the war was over--that got Godzilla going.
