whats the A for on nhl shirts?

    Alternate captain. Basically they act as the captain when they're not on the ice or not playing.

    Usually there's one Captain and two Alternates, though NHL rules allow for up to 3 alternates. Or there's just 3 or 4 alternate captains if the team doesn't select a captain.

      Misworded. "when they're not on the ice" meant "when the Captain's not on the ice".

    It depends on which one you are referring to. Nearly every team has an A in its name, and therefore, the name with at least one A is displayed somewhere on the uniform and "shirts". It isn't even clear what you mean by "nhl shirts". The only ones I know of are the fan shirts at retail.
