Can I say this in UK English: just checking to know if you have any news for me?

This is for an email.

The uni people haven't sent me a reply about a specific question. They said that would get back to me as soon as possible but it has been 5 days already waiting.

Update:

The lady said that she would ask her colleagues about my question. She hasn't replied in 5 days. Is that the correct way to say it? : Dear x. Just checking to know if you have any news for me about the

    sorry to bother you, but have you received my email dated ???

    If you sent it 5 days ago they don't work weekends, so it's only 3 days.
