How do you stay unhappy? What stops you? You sound a bit depressed to me, so I would do these things first before I try to figure out your whole life and world.
Stay sober. If you drink to drunk or get high to vegetable ever, you are wasting a good bit of money and time. You are not thinking clearly.
Turn off the TV and Games. Think for yourself instead of being nursed.
Stop eating junk food. Garbage in, garbage out.
Go for long walks or work out in a gym a couple days a week. This will give you energy and a clear head.
If you do all that and are not "happy" remember that "happy" is the residue left over after you have lived a loving, fun, and useful day. Not everyday will be a laugh riot, but the general idea is to enjoy life.
Then pick a group, like a church, painting group, car club, anything that tickles you, and makes you feel ready to jump up and go every time. Go, get involved, run for office, paint signs, get to know the others in the group. There will be someone there you like.
Give yourself time to do a hobby like dance or fish or teach wrestling.
Work at a job you can live with. If you hate it, start now to make your life better. Spruce up your resume and go to job interviews. Do not quit until you have another job lined up.
If you do all that and still can figure out what keeps you going, please go see a Doctor. You may have an illness that is making you depressed.
