I think it's pretty tainted. They made their fans wait how long for the big final season, and then they served up that lame crap.
GoT writers have always liked p*ssing their fans off, no secret there. The Red Wedding, the sacrifice of that little girl, going to pay-per-view a couple of years ago, splitting the final season in half, making the fans wait an extra year for the final six... that was all underhanded, but forgivable. But then they did, well you saw what they did.
How much are the Thrones fans expected to take and remain loyal? Ask the Star Wars fans, who have remained loyal to their empire for 40 years. We tolerated whiny Anikin, we tolerated the constant re-editing (Han shot first, dammit), we even tolerated Jar Jar, and we kept coming out when a new one was released. Then they did Last Jedi, and insulted their loyal fans and then blamed the fans for not liking it.
Thrones might have just done their Last Jedi. That whole saying about biting the hand that feeds you comes to mind.
"You have failed me for the last time, admiral."
