The semantics involved conceal real horrors. The pretty sounding word "promote" sounds positive and optimistic. Even "exploration" and "colonisation" are presented as positive or good things. The truth about Renaissance Europe is grisly and horrible. The lovely sweet folks building the beautiful cathedrals like Notre Dame in Paris were also torturing people, even small children, and burning them alive and Europe was a nightmare to be in. If anything, most people were trying to escape the horror. The real process of colonisation involved murder of millions of people, genocide. Then the rulers presiding over all the misery and bloodshed and horror started importing kidnapped Africans and bringing them to the New World in the holds of ships chained to dead and dying people for weeks in excrement and vomit and then tortured, mutilated and whipped them when they got here. It's like a nightmare but history classes and movies focus on the clothes, jewellery, and furniture of the rich.

They relearned the world was round, an enclosed globe, compass, navigation, advanced mathematics, relearned geometry, and had learned to be excellent ship builders and sailors and some scientists.

Odd as it sounds, it all started with the love of spices from the east. Europeans no longer wanted to pay the high taxes put on Silk Road goods so the Europeans went and found a way of getting the species from India and goods from China themselves. Well once they saw their technology was superior to the native people's around the world, then colonization began. Often in the name of Jesus.
