It's a nick name or his parents' pet name for him. I went all through school with a guy whom EVERYONE (parents, teachers, and classmates) called "Bubba". I can't remember to this day what his "real" name is.

I don't know for sure why everyone began calling him "Bubba", but I've been told that his little sister (when she was learning to talk) couldn't pronounce "brother". She pronounced it "Bubba"; and so Bubba he became, to his family and everybody else.

Where is it that you live that you are hearing this? Its not something that's being said on the East Coast.
