Are some actors worth more than others?

Such as one actor demands more money for a role, they get rejected by producer or director but then end up paying another actor more than the other actor wanted

Why would that happen?

For instance Steve McQueen was offered the lead role of Willard in Apocalypse Now (1979), this was in 1976 and he refused but wanted the role of Colonel Kurtz and demanded a large sum of money but Coppola turned him down.

Yet eventually they cast an actor as Kurtz who was not as famous as McQueen but paid him more than McQueen wanted.

Ate some actors worth more than others? What makes an actor command huge salaries?

The fact that actors sell tickets.

That is how Hollywood works. If you sell tickets, they're willing to pay you more. Earners make movies.

Your story kind of sucks, given he didn't just turn down the money he turned down the role in favor of the one Brando ended up with and for which Brando was paid three and a half million. Brando is without a doubt the more famous actor as well, far more famous than McQueen, even at the height of his popularity. Now we don't really know what the original script might have offered McQueen, but he'd have been a radically different Kurtz.

Source(s): Brando had two Academy Awards. McQueen? Zero.

    Why did it happen?

Because the producers and director ultimately decided they didn't want McQueen for the role of Kurtz.

We all know how fixated you are on brando. But the fact is that McQueen was not more famous than brando and a radically different type.

McQueen also was known for being egotistical, and if they were going have to work with a big ego they decided to go with the actor who they thought had the skill and look for the role.

Actors agents negotiate the best rate they can for their clients, so the difference in pay boils down to who the producers want and who they think will bring in the bigger audiences.

Yes, but what they are worth is mainly subjective.

Studios will hire a name actor to draw in more viewers while an unnamed actor would be a better fit.

Many factors,,, how good the actor's agent is, how big his last movie was, how well he and the director or producer get along, etc.,

In the movie "The Longest Day" John Wayne was paid ten times what any other actor in the film was paid and had less screen time then most of them,, and we're talking the likes of Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Richard Burton, Robert Ryan, etc., some of the biggest stars of the day.

Bruce Willis wanted one million a day for "The Expendables II", Stallone said no.

After Johnny Depp's last half a dozen movies have flopped he only gets about half what he used to get per film.

Oh, and Col. Kurtz was played by Marlon Brando,, seven years after the Godfather,, he was bigger than McQueen by Hollywood standards.

interesting answer; some actors have more presence/ portrayal skill than others; and re the example, the original version of Apocalypse Now is a great film, so certainly the casting was successful, yet, Steve McQueen might have been superb in it, & perhaps might have received an ac.award for it

McQueen basically finished acting in 1974 so when Apocalypse came along, his star had faded slightly.
