My Newfie is pretty cool. He prefers living outside but can come in through his special door at any time, he has a heated house.
My Newfie eordpkd with my better cross, they pull a wagon with hay bales to do horse chores, then they pull the wagon full of grain. They all have their own chores, and if they ever get kicked or bitten their costs help protect their skin.
My Newfie doesn’t slobber like most except in 90 or above and he spends time in pasture hading the cows and horses out of the pond so they don’t founder and drown themselves. Especially the cows ate stupid enough to fall asleep in the cool water and sink after an hour or two. Can you chase a cow out of a pond that doesn’t want to leave, are your teeth sharp?
We use him to pull the grandkids and he loves carting them around the yard, lives for the attention. We also gather branches and he pulls the wood sled from the forest area down to the yard some had wood for kindling and bonfires.
I couldn’t see my 2 labs pulling some 300 to 500 pounds around like it’s nothing, and they don’t need tune ups, run out of gas, stall out. They love to work, bring in their harnesses and once harnessed run to the correct chore cart to start the day. I’ve had no other breed so set on working, so tactil wanting to be with humans. Even when the kids are out and one screams in delight when playing the Newfie is instantly there checking on the child or alerts me there’s a problem.
The closest worker I gave to my Newfie is the Aussi shepherd, I can give him a horses name and he drives the correct animal in from the field rather then all of them. He also fetched named objects and can go in the house to bring me a bottle of water from the cooler. (My labs can do that too). But the Aussie is getting up In years he’s slowing down but seems to get smarter and smarter y the day. If I didn’t have these dogs I would have to hire more help on the farm, or buy a golf cart, 3 wheeler and a small tractor. Dog powers way more fun. Who cares if you need two trips vs one.
These stupid dogs are built for the cold, draft work, carting and especially water rescue. Where a Labrador would go into shock from being in frigid water the newfies coat protects him and is somewhat water boyant to help him float.
